During the coronavirus emergency, the Hungary government requests for the power to rule by decree. The request has been accepted in a vote of 137:53 in the Hungarian Parliament.
That means the Hungary government now has a greater power than before. They can issue decrees (~laws) and execute them.
This is not usual in most democratic nations, where the legislature (people who write laws) should be separated from the executive (government).
And this “rule by decree” law has no time limit.
Opposition parties and human rights groups share concern of losing freedom of speech, accuse the government of including extreme measures in the laws.
This is why the result of the vote is so controversial. More than 100,000 people have signed a petition against the move.
Think:
Do you agree that the government should gain more power in order to handle the emergency situation?
Do you think it is a good idea?
Or should they respect democracy and take it step by step as usual?
What about the part that the “rule by decree” law has no time limit?
